So many people walk around thinking they have a goal when all they have is a wish. You begin the art of goalsetting when you take a step to putting it down in a language that is capable of guiding your actions.
I find George T Doran’s S.M.A.R.T goals as a perfect tool for writing down a goal in a language that can propel you to success
S – Specific: If a goal can’t be specific then it doesn’t qualify to be called a goal at all. You cannot just desire to be successful without being specific about what you wish to be successful at. Being specific entails identifying the area you wish to improve, the product you wish sell, the kind of influence you wish to have, the kind of audience you wish to reach and the message you wish to spread
M – Measurable: Being specific may give you focus but until you set goals with actual measures you may not be able to evaluate your progress. It tells you how far you have come and how much more you have left. I used to feel unsure of attaching measure to my goals because it feels safe when I don’t a measure that haunts me. When you set a goal that declares the number of people you wish to reach, amount of products you wish to sell etc it makes you energized towards a target.
A – Attainable: A goal with a good measure could help you evaluate your progress but if that goal is not attainable you could be overwhelmed to give up. “The greater danger for most of us is not in setting our aim too high and falling short but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark” Michelangelo. A goal is meant to stretch us, take us out of our comfort zone.
R – Relevant: Set a goal close to your heart. I believe this “If the heart wants it badly it would move the whole body to get it” Set your goal on something that means a lot to you. In some cases, the direct action may not be your passion but it gives you the platform to achieve it such as; you may embark on a business to make profit in order to support orphans, or feed the poor. The business itself is not your passion but seeing the orphans and poor being fed is.
T – Time bound: Without time allocation your goal is vulnerable to procrastination. I experience a deep sense of urgency each moment I attach a time to my goals. Not to be in a hurry but also not to grow old without achieving anything is the reason why.
